NEVOGILDE HOUSE

Eduardo Souto Moura, Oporto, Portugal: 1983-1988

The lot is made up of a set of separately acquired fragments. Moving walls, earth and choosing the stones - this was virtually the "making of the house". With its complex programme, the house arises in the continuity of nature. In a quasi-parallel relation to the walls, spaces were placed between the stones in a row along a gallery that structures the building as a whole. The various parts of the house can be identified from the south, by openings that give onto the lawn. On the north side only the door indicates the entrance. From the street there is only the gate, beckoning you to enter.
