Patricking

Patricking hates to call himself a designer and always has... hence his place in the catbird seat at THIRST. Most of his works are culled from influences such as kitsch American design, badly produced consumer items ("Jesus Loves You" car air fresheners), party fliers, ad nauseum. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with special tutelage from Professor Cary Staples during his senior year.

After college, he spiralled into a post-college free-range anxiety fit due to a lack of structure and a lack of acceptable job, and began designing in the environments he loves most: nightclubs, parties, raves, 'zines, and independent companies. During this period he worked for clubs such as The Underground, Closet and Planet Earth, magazines such as Watch and Metropulse, and small companies such as Friction Vintage Clothing, Mish Mosh Clothiers, Salon Visage, Boy Productions, and other fly-by-night-and-disappear-in-ten-minutes companies.

Patricking and THIRST discovered each other in late 1993 when THIRST principal Rick Valicenti asked Patricking to finish his logo for Closet into a font family, and thereby his career in typography was begun. He has released two font families through Thirstype: Fast Girls and Bad Excuse. He also has several embarassing fonts stuck in the closet for later release when they evolve into something worthwhile...

Patricking's work and writing has appeared in Print, How, Graphis Letterhead, Idea (Japan), Eye (Europe), Stick, Snowboarder, and Plow, as well as several promotional pieces for Gilbert Paper, Revelation Snowboards, spAce, and a couple of indie film releases.

He can usually be found at either Berlin, Crobar, the Vortex, or Red Dog at any given point during the nights. Email him if you want to go out dancing at Altarama@aol.com.
